  • The setting plays a crucial role in how a theme develops in a story. The theme is very important in all stories, but it is especially important in Perks of Being a Wallflower. The setting matches well with the theme of how abuse can affect many people and an individual because most of the story takes place in a suburban high school. this fits well because abuse happens in high school, whether it be sexual abuse or emotional abuse. It also serves as a replica of the real world showing how abuse can go completely unnoticed, or never brought up. "People accept the love they think they deserve." (24) this quote shows how the suburban high school setting shows the difficulties of recognizing and dressing abuse. Because abusive relationships can go unnoticed, and be seen as normal.
  • On page (204) Charlie has a flashback of the abuse his aunt inflicted on him and affected him unconsciously until that point. Then that memory became conscious and became the central conflict of the story. It changes Charlie and shows the lasting impact that abuse can have on a person's mental well-being, whether they recognize it or not. It changes Charlie because it finished the downward spiral that had been going on for the last couple of months that have been building and building and this was the last straw. It ultimately sends Charlie to the hospital where he stays there for rehabilitation. It not only changes Charlie, but it also changes how the reader perceives Charlie. It shows why Charlie reacts to things the way he does because of the emotional trauma the incident inflicted on him.
  • “I don’t know if I will have the time to write any more letters because I might be too busy trying to participate” (213) This quote shows how much Charlie has grown and his effort to overcome the emotional scars of abuse. It shows his journey towards personal healing and recovery from the abuse that was inflicted upon him. It is shown that he makes a full recovery and overcomes his past. Then he gets out of rehab and meets up with Sam and Patrick and they immediately go to the tunnel. Abuse can affect different people in different ways. It’s just about how you look at it and the actions you take to progress.
