- While Rowdy and Junior were playing basketball, Junior thinks, "I would always love Rowdy, and would always miss him too. Just as I would always love ad miss my grandmother, my big sister, and Eugene Just as I would always love and miss my reservation and my tribe. I hoped and prayed that they would someday forgive me for leaving them" (Alexie 230).
- Grandmother Spirit wasn't a powwow dancer.

- After finding out his sister died, Junior thought, "I knew then that she didn't want to tell me how my sister had died. I figured it must have been an awful death. 'Was she murdered?' I asked 'Please,' Miss Warren said. 'You need to talk to your father" (Alexie 202).
- While in the car with his dad, "My dad started to cry. Not big tears. Just little ones he breathed deep and tried to top them. I guess he wanted to be strong in front of his son. 'I love you too,' I said. I never said that to him. (Alexie 207).

- During Grandmother Spirits funeral, Junior noticed, "My mothers vocie had gotten all formal. Indians are good at that. We'll be talking and laughing and carrying on like normal , and then, BOOM, we get all serious and scared and start talking like some English Royalty" (Alexie 165).
- During Wellpinit and Reardens intense basketball game, "And Rowdy rose into the air. And I rose with him. AND THEN I ROSE ABOVE HIM! Yep, if I believed in magic, in ghosts, then I think maybe I was rising on the shoulders of my dead grandmother and Eugene. Or maybe I was rising on my mother and fathers hope for me. For once in my life, I jumped higher then Rowdy" (Alexie 192).
- After joining the class for the first time in a few days Junior got yelled at, "Instead, it was Gordy who defended me. He stood up with his textbook and dropped it. He looked so strong. He looked like a warrior \. He was protecting me like Rowdy used to protect me. Gordy showed alot of courage standing up to the teacher like that. And his courgage inspired others" (Alexie 175).
