- The Compromise of of 1850 is a comprise between the north and the south. California had been added to the US and the south wanted it to be a slave state while the north wanted it to be free state. The south got to be slave states while the north was free.

- Uncle Tom's Cabin is a story based on a slave named Josiah Henson. It was written in 1852. The book talks about the way slaves are treated by their owners. It opened many peoples eyes to slaves experiances. The book was banned in the south because of the ideas it spread

- The kansas nebraska act allowed popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty is where states can vote whether their a free state or a slave states. This lead to "bleeding kansas". Kansas was going to vote to be a free state but people from missouri came over to vote and it became a slave states. The pro slavery people rioted and looted kansas.

- The Dred Scott decision decided whether a slave should be free if they were moved to a free state in 1857. This is a problem the superme court never had to deal with and they eventually decided that the slaves would still be slaves with their owner.

- The election of 1860 was hectic. Abraham Lincoln was a republican. He said that it was best to stop slavery from spreading to the west and slavery in other places would die down.The southern democrats wanted slavery to continue. Abraham won president without a single vote from the south.

- Harpers Ferry took place in 1862. An abolitionist named John Brown had the idea to arm slaves to over take slave owners to end slavery. This didnt work because he didnt have any slaves to hel phim fight although he had ten other people with him. The people of Harpar ferry cornerd john and his team and they were either killed or injured
