Unnamed speaker is invited to visit his childhood friend, Usher, because he's mentally ill and struggling. US takes a ride to the house on his horse. Speaker learns that the House of Usher is very scary looking and gets creeped out.

US sees his childhood friend, Usher, for the first time in a long time. He quickly learns that his friend has not been taking great care of himself, and that his appearance is very different from his younger self. Usher looks sickly and corpse-like.

Usher tells the speaker that he thinks he is cursed, and that his sister is going to die soon. He talks about the illness his sister has. He expresses his fears and explains his mental illness into further depth. His sister dies on the first day there. They go and bury her in a coffin and put it in the wall.

Usher begins showing signs of mania. He starts singing and dancing around right after having a breakdown. A huge storm that only takes place on the property starts. Then, he breaks down again, worrying that they buried his sister alive and that he heard her downstairs. He's worried she's going to come back for revenge. He's scared of being scared.

Usher's sister is in fact alive, she scares Usher to death, and the house begins to crumble. US runs out of the house in horror.
