  • Lucia, who just got into a new relationship, begins to chime in. Lucia tells Marta and Isabella that she currently is not on birth control because her boyfriend Eduardo believes that birth control is not a healthy option and that withdrawal should be effective enough to prevent pregnancy. Marta gently tells Lucia that it's okay to have personal agency in decisions about her own body, and that she should talk more extensively with Eduardo about contraception because withdrawal is not an effective method of prevention. They give her some pointers about how to broach the subject.
  • The women talk amongst themselves about the stigma present in their community surrounding sexuality and birth control. They hit on themes of religiosity, machismo, and familismo and how these influence their decisions. Isabella also speaks about acculturation and her experience and perspective on this topic immigrating from another country. They seek to normalize conversations like these and use of the birth control pill. Lucia and Isabella decide to be buddies and set a time to go to the clinic together to have conversations with their doctors.
  • We're going to go to the clinic together next Saturday!
  • That's a great idea guys!
  • Marta explains her own story. At first, she too was hesitant based on things that she had heard about the pill. But, she also knew her dreams of educational attainment and other aspirations she had in life would be difficult to achieve if she were to get pregnant. A close friend of hers, Gloria, accidentally got pregnant in college and had to take time off from her studies. She tells her friends how she made a doctor's appointment to discuss her concerns with a professional who quieted her fears. She explains how empowering it felt to have reproductive autonomy.
