- in chapter one after introducing himself and we are shown the conflict in the story between the greasers and socs. ponyboy gets jumped by a group of socs while he's walking home.
- in chapter two when ponyboy is talking to cherry while their in the line for popcorn. While their on the topic of Johnny pony has a flashback to when he found Johnny in a vacant lot where he just got beat up. by a bunch of socs.
- in chapter three ponyboy comes home really late because he fell asleep in a parking lot. darry is really angry because he was worried for him and hits ponyboy. ponyboy was angry so he ran away with johnny after he got hit by darry.
