  • Goneril and Regan have both praised their father and received their land and fortune. When it is Cordelia's turn, she doesn't give Lear the satisfaction and stroke his ego. He becomes angry and takes away her land and disowns her as a child. Kent stands up for Cordelia and gets banished.
  • Nothing
  • Nothing will come of nothing. Speak again.
  • Potential suitors for Cordelia - Duke of Burgundy and the King of France - talk with Lear about Cordelia's loss of land and fortune. Burgundy declines Lear's offer, the King of France takes Cordelia anyway and they leave. After, Regan and Goneril talk and create a plan to watch and eventually take down their father.
  • Edmund plots against his father and brother because he feels he deserves half of his fathers inheritance. He is an illegitimate son and therefore does not get any. Edmund believes that if he can use his wit and knowledge he deserves the money.
  • I grow, I prosper
  • Well, my legitimate, if this letter speed and my invitation thrive
  • Edmund forges a letter from Edgar - his brother - plotting to kill their father and take his inheritance. Gloucester believes the letter and blames it in the stars and eclipse. Later on, Edmund convinces Edgar that their father is angry at him, and he should leave immediately and not return until Edmund tells him to.
  • Goneril is talking to her steward to provoke Lear so she will have a reason to kick him out. She writes to her sister to inform her, Lear is coming her way and to stick to the plan.
  • Even though Kent has been banished, he changes his appearance so he can come back and still serve the King. The fool makes his first appearance and makes comments about Lear's stupidity to give away his kingdom.
