Texte du Storyboard

  • My name is Sofka Skipwith, and I was born Princess Sofia Dolgorouky of Russia. I was born on October 23, 1907 and was raised mainly by my grandmother growing up because my parents divorced when I was four years old.
  • Grandmother!
  • EXPOSITION
  • Yes, thank you......
  • You must be hungry. Here take this.
  • I've always had an affinity for the poor and oppressed. When I heard from a family servant that there were starving people in Russia, I stopped eating dessert and snuck my pastries to poor children who were about my age.
  • When I was older, after the Russian revolution, I was living as an exile princess in England. I came to visit my mother in France........that's when everything changed. I was forced onto a train and sent to a internement camp in Vittel.
  • Sofka!
  • Move it!
  • SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION:Vittel was different from the other camps in terms of living conditions. It was made of different hotels and a large park, surrounded by barbed wire and constantly guarded by armed Nazi guards. Prisoners were usually opponents in war. They didn't perform forced labor and were allowed to organize classes. The camp contained tennis courts, a library, a hospital, and stores. Films were shown occasionally on the weekends.
  • In 1943, a group of 250 Polish Jews arrived in Vittel.
  • The thing that struck us about these newcomers was their air of sleep-walkers. They appeared dazed. They spoke little, never seemed to smile, walked slowly in the park, as though nervous of doing wrong.
  • RISING ACTION
  • It had been about a few days, and I was continuously trying to help organize cultural activities for the Jews. I tried to help as many Jewish children escape as possible. I found that the two hundred and fifty Jews were going to be deported and sent to Auschwitz in only a few weeks!
