- Ma'am, I plead not guilty. I admit the fact that I overstayed my visa, however, I regard my current situation to be sufficient of earning me a status as a refugee.
- The statement of the United Nations defines a refugee as an individual who faces persecution in their home country. Judging by your personal status files, it is clear that you do not fall within this category.

- Your honor, Mr Teitota has a certain point.
- Kiribati, Mr Teitota's homeland, faces immediate threat from rising sea levels due to global climate change. It couldn't be clearer that his deportation would lead to passive persecution by the circumstances he will face back there.
- Kiribati is currently being threatened by storm surges, flooding and water contamination; surely this is no different from active persecution that we regard in terms of refugee standards?
- It's not just me that's caught up in this issue; I have a wife and three children to protect. How am I supposed to take them back to a home under environmental threats?
