- In 1521, 500 Spanish soldiers invaded what is now Mexico. This event was what led to the Spanish rule that lasted 300 centuries.
- During this period of Spanish rule, a class system based on race was developed. This system was a social hierarchy in which Criollos, someone of Spanish decent born in Mexico, were the second highest in the rankings.
- You cannot be king, you are but a measly Criollo!
- The people of Mexico, especially Criollos, were upset with being treated as less than. The Criollos were the ones that inspired the independence movement.
- WE ARE FED UP WITH BEING TREATED THIS WAY!
- Napoleon invaded in 1808, this allowed people to freely revolt amongst the chaos already occurring in Mexico.
- We need to fight for our rights!!
- In 1810, Miguel Hidalgo was the one to denounce the observation of the castle system which showed people that standing up for their rights, no matter their race, was worth it.
- The same year, Hidalgo initiated the Mexico's War of Independence by ringing a church bell, gathering people for a revolution.
