  • The colonists were filled with rage by how the British were creating so many taxes
  • The Boston Tea Party
  • On March 5, 1770, British soldiers shot and killed several people. This event being very tragic, Patriots Paul Revere and Samuel Adams heavily publicized this. Gunfire killed three people and wounded eight others, later it was found two died of their wounds.

  • The British East India Company had huge amounts of tea but was not allowed to sell it directly to the colonists. Parliament passed the Tea Act in 1773. The ships loaded with tea arrived in the Boston Harbor in 1773. On the night of December 16, 1773, colonists sneaked onto the three tea-filled ships and dumped over 340 tea chests into the Boston Harbor.
  • When Britain's prime minister heard the news of the Boston tea party, he was furious. In response, Parliament decided to punish Boston. By passing the the Coercive Acts. These acts involved requiring colonists to house British soldiers, closing the Boston Harbor until Boston paid for the ruined tea, and much more. The colonists called these, the Intolerable Acts.
  • For many colonists the closing of Boston Harbor was the final insult in a long list of abuses. In response, all the colonies except Georgia sent representatives to a meeting in October 1774. Known as the First Continental Congress ,was a gathering of colonial leaders who were deeply troubled about Great Britain and its colonies in America.
