  • Introduction
  • Hospital Scene
  • Mom and Dad Fight
  • The main characters in this story are Jeannette, Lori, Brian, and Mareen. There parents are Rex and Rose Walls. This story takes place in the mid to late 1900s. The book starts out in Arizona, but the family ends up moving around the country. They always had to move because the father could not hold a steady job and was always getting in trouble. The kids grew up taking care of themselves because they were raised poor, and their parents were not the most responsible (27).
  • Jeannette Being Bullied
  • Jeannette catches herself on fire when she was just three years old. She was making hot dogs by herself because her parents trusted her, but then her pink dress from her grandmother caught on fire. Her mother rushed her to the hospital because she was severely burned. After being in the hospital for a few weeks and receiving great care, her father ran her out of the hospital because they could not afford the hospital bill (10-14).
  • Jeannette Moving to New York
  • Rex and Rose have gotten into an argument that lasted for a day or two. This fight was caused because the two were putting blame on each other over why their family was starving. While neighbors were crowding around their house, objects started to fly out the window. Next, Rose's body starts to hang out the window while Rex is holding on to her. Then, the kids ran upstairs to save her (71-72).
  • Conclusion
  • When Jeannette first moved to Welch, she was quite different than the other kids. She was very small, did not have an Appalachian accent, and was very poor. On Jeannette's first day of fifth grade, she became a big target for the school bullies. That day when she was on the playground for recess, something bad happened. A group of girls surrounded her, started saying hurtful things, and even physically beating her up (138-139).
  • It has been sometime since Lori left for New York to start a new life. Jeannette is also going to do the same thing because she wants to better her life too. Before leaving, she was woken up by Brian saying that she'd be leaving in two hours. Jeannette then saw Rex outside waiting for her with her suitcase and hey headed to the station. As they were waiting for the bus, Rex gave Jeanette a pocket knife to protect herself. When the bus arrived, Jeannette gave her dad a huge then hopped on the bus. When the bus started moving, she turned around and waved at her father (240-241).
  • In the conclusion of, The Glass Castle, everyone except Mareen went to go visit Jeannette's new house after the death of the father. Jeannette shares her house with her new husband John, and they invite the family to come over in New York and eat. They have a pleasant dinner without any tension. Overall, after reading this part of the book, we have realized it is still possible for people to stay close even after rough times and just be together as one (285-288).
