Texte du Storyboard

  • “ I have now reached a period of my life when I can give dates.” Frederick is leaving Baltimore at about 12 years old. He has learned to read and is being sent back to the farm. He’s grasped ahold of the ideas of freedom
  • “The details of the affair are as follows: Mr.Covey sent me, very early in the morning of one of the coldest mornings of the month of January, to the woods, to get a load of wood.” When Frederick was sent back to the farm he was old enough to do farm work. The oxen he was given was not tame and broke several fences resulting in a awful lashing for him. The damage the oxen had created was blamed on Frederick Douglass.
  • “ My thoughts would compel utterance: with no audience but the almighty, I would pour out my soul’s complaints…” Frederick Douglass decided to try and escape after watching many boats on the water. With the information he’s gained he creates his plan. He pours his heart out to the ocean around him.
  • “When we were at work in the cornfield he would sometimes crawl on his hands and knees to avoid detection, and all at once he would rise nearly in our midst, and scream out, “ Ha, ah! Come, come! Dash on! Dash on!” Mr. Covey was a cruel man. He would wait for any instance a person would stop working and yell at them. He gave them little time to rest, eat, and sleep.
  • “Our reason for taking the water route was, that we were less liable to be suspected as runaways.” They set their plan for freedom into action. They were very careful while creating their plan. They thought out every conflict and pushed themselves out.
  • “I succeeded in creating in them a strong desire to learn how to read.” Frederick Douglass was teaching slaves to read on the sabbath. Word stayed close. If masters were to find out they would be severely punished.
