  • On the 29th of January 1840, William Hobson arrives to the Bay of Islands, NZ.
  • Shortly after William Hobson arrives in New Zealand, he drafted the first version of the treaty of Waitangi with some help from British resident; James Busby.
  • On the 4th of February 1840, Henry Williams was given that one night to translate the treaty into Maori. He did it with the help of his son, Edward.

  • On the 5th of February 1840, around 500 Maori chiefs were presented the treaty and were given 3 days to discuss whenever they should sign or not.
  • On the 6th of February 1840, more than 40 Maori chiefs signed the treaty, the first one to sign being Hone Heke.
  • On the 3rd of September 1840, near Kawhia, the last signature was finally put on the treaty of Waitangi.
