  • Matter MattersIntro to the Law of Conservation of MassBy: Charles Rust
  • Johnny's water is gone but its mass is not. His water just evaporated. His water just changed from a liquid to a gas. The mass of the water is still there but is in a gas.
  • What happened to my water? Also why is it so hot in here?
  • Avery's dry ice is gone but its mass is not gone. Her dry ice just went through sublimation. The mass of the dry ice is still there but the ice went from a solid to a gas.
  • What happened to my dry ice?
  • Johnny's water is back. His water just evaporated and then deposed. His water just changed from a gas to a solid. Some of the mass of the water went from the air to back onto the glass.
  • Why is it so cold in here and why is there frost on my glass?
  • Zack's ice cream melted. It may look like there is a lot less ice cream, but no ice cream was lost. There is still the same amount of mass in the ice cream. The ice cream just went from a solid to a liquid.
  • Oh no, my ice cream! There is so little left!
  • Zack's ice cream now froze. It may look like there is more ice cream, but no ice cream was gained. There is still the same amount of mass in the ice cream.
  • Wait now there is more ice cream in my bowl!
