The Myth Of Oedipus

- King Laius and Queen Jocasta learned from an oracle that their newborn son would kill his father and marry his mother. The king and queen gave their newborn baby to a shepherd wanting him to kill the child
- The shepherd took Oedipus out to the fields to be hung but didn't follow through letting him go. Oedipus grew up to become a prince in another city because the king & queen of that city adopted him. He believed that those were his actual parents. Oedipus ended up running away
- Oedipus traveled to the city of Thebes where his real parents actually rule. He found out the city was cursed by a Sphinx, he saved the city by lifting the curse by solving the Sphinx riddle. The Sphinx was embarrassed so she killed herself
- While in the city, Oedipus crosses paths with his dad on a road (with him not knowing). The two got into a big altercation which ended in Oedipus killing his own father
- Since Oedipus saved the city of Thebes the Queen wanted to repay him so they got married & had 4 children together. IT turns out that the queen was Oedipus' mother but they both did not know this.The prophecy was fulfilled that was told at Oedipus' birth.
- Oedipus and his mom find out about their relations, so she killed herself while he poked his eyes out with her earrings. He also refused to be king, leaving it up to his two sons. They took turns being king but they got stingy with each other, went to war, and ended up killing one another
