- coal can be extracted from the ground by surface mining of underground mining
- coal is transported across the country on trains and barges
- coal is used to generate electricity
- coal is burned in a boiler to create steam which is eventually turned into fuel to generate electricity
- environmental impacts: coal combustion contributes to acid rain and smog, these toxic substances can affect our health in negative ways
