- As you can see, there are two different species of birds here. they are probably descendants from the same common ancestor They both live in this very small island, its their habitat. They have to change and adapt to it, by eating the easiest food they can find, fish.
- In order to survive they have to eat fish, but they tend to swim away very fast, so they have to catch them quickly. Unfortunately, these birds have different genotypes and phenotypes. The birds on the right do not have long beaks, unlike the birds on the left.
- The birds with short beaks are struggling to catch the fish and the birds with long beaks are catching them easily. In nature, some variation are favorable. In this case we could say the long beaks are a favorable trait and it is used to hunt.
- The birds with long beaks already have food, the other birds are starving and will probably not survive. There is genetic variation in this offspring as you can clearly tell.
- The short beak birds have all starved to death and now there is only one species of birds. The fishes were probably not the best prey for this kind of bird, since the predatordidn't have thenecessary traits to hunt and kill them.This is natural selection because all the birds that were not fit to survive died and now there is just one species left.
- The population of long beak birds has increased now, and the population of short beaked birds has decreased. This is part of evolution and natural selection so, the birds that were meant to survive will survive and the ones that weren't won't.
