- The Delian league was founded in 478 BC, after the Persian war. Its purpose was to protect enemies from Persia. People gave cash, ships, and soldiers and had equal votes in the council. Pericles used the money to build their navy.
- We need to protect ourselves from the enemies from Persia!

- The Peloponnesian league was formed so that Sparta could protect themselves against the Agros and the possible uprising of the Helots.

- Due to Athens good navy, the Athenians decided to attack from water. The Athenians withdrew and hide behind their city walls. The Spartans army marched into Athenians land expecting a battle, but the Athenians were hidden behind their walls. In an attempt to weaken the Athenians economy. In 430 BC Athens started struggling with typhoid fever, the fever quickly became a plague. The plague was killing 1 in 3 Athenians. Neither Athens or Sparta could overpower the other. Athens signed a truce to stop fighting. Sparta and Athens entered a period of peace.

- The truce was supposed to last 50 years, but it only lasted 2. Sparta and Athens went back to war over the land of Sicily. In 414 BC Athens led siege Syracuse. In the invasion of Syracuse the Athenians made very mistakes, due to their attack being very disorganized. The Spartans arrived and they attacked the Athens on land and at sea. The Spartans sank all 200 of Athens ships, and enslaved or killed 40,000 soldiers. Sparta seized control of the land around Athens, cutting of Athens agricultural and economic resources. In 414 BC Sparta allied with the Persians. The Spartans and Persians together blocked the land and sea. Leaving Athens only two options: starve, or surrender. In 404 BC, Athens surrendered and the Peloponnesian War was over.
