- The North was a abolitionist against slavery while the south wanted the keep slaves for labor and other needs. Slavery was the cause of a majority of the problems between the 2 sides

- Admitted California to being a free state. This helped make sure that there was a balance between the free and slave states. The Fugitive Slave Act was then passed which required states in the North to return slaves to the South.

- Georgia decides rather they want to secede from the Union or not. Alexander Stephens votes that they should not secede from the Union. Georgia ends up seceding from the Union.
