- "Hi Jonathan. My name is Miss Stevens. I am your afternoon teacher this year."(*This takes place in my first teaching job 20 years ago....teaching Gr 3/4 for 4 afternoons per week. Jonathan remains my toughest student to date).
- "I hate you. You are the worst teacher ever. I hope when you go away on your honeymoon that your plane blows up," says Jonathan.(This particular child had deep rooted anger issues. He had his own personal butler, dad was very rich and married to his 4th wife and had Jonathan. His dad was full of rage and his son followed in his footsteps. Dad thought it was funny when Jonathan made that comment to me as we had a meeting at school about it with the 'school team' and dad laughed and didn't think there was a problem. After this meeting I knew I had to somehow earn Jonathan's trust because I knew there wasn't any parental support.)
- "Jonathan, would you like to be my special helper? I have a lot of special jobs that I need help with. I know you like helping with the bulletin board. Can you help me please?" says Miss Stevens."Yes, Miss Stevens. I will help you. I don't want to, but I guess I will," says Jonathan.(I knew he loved helping with bulletin boards according to the morning teacher. So, I capitalized on this. I found what he was interested in, and this was our way of spending 1-1 time to build trust and build a relationship)
- "Ok boys and girls. You know I'm getting married this summer. I have a contest for you! You get to design a pamphlet on a destination from around the world and your job is to try to convince me to honeymoon there. The winner gets to choose a friend and both come to Dairy Queen with me for blizzards," said Miss Stevens."I can't wait. This is going to be fun," said the class. (I rigged the competition so that he would win. We went to DQ together with his best friend. He was so excited and from then on his behaviour towards me was much, much better).
- "Hi Miss Stevens. Can I walk with you during lunch time?" said Jonathan."Of course, Jonathan. How are you doing today? What's new?" said Miss Stevens
- "Hi Miss Stevens. Do you need any help today?" said Jonathan."I would love your help. Thanks for asking!" said Miss Stevens.
