  • Summary: The story starts off with Odysseus in Troy fighting the Trojan War. Homer says that Odysseus came up with the idea of sending the wooden horse full of Greeks in it into Troy. This is how the Greeks won the war.
  • Island of Aeolus
  • Summary: The wind carried Odysseus and his men to the Island of the Cicones. There, they killed the men whom they fought and enslaved the women. In addition, they butchered their sheep and cattle while some Cicones escaped and ran back to their homes to call for more help.
  • Laestrygonians
  • Summary: On the island of the Lotus Eaters, some of Odysseus' men ate the Lotus Flower that was so generously offered by the civilians of that island. Fortunately for Odysseus, he was able to bring his men back to the ship and tie them down before they could run back to the Lotus Eaters.
  • Circe's Island
  • Summary: Odysseus and his crew stop here and decide to rest and eat the provisions that were already there. They did not know that this was a Cyclopes', who is the son of Poseidon, home, and soon the Cyclopes returned. He was infuriated to see men eating his food. Therefore, being a cannibal, he eats some of the crew. Odysseus stabs the Cyclopes in his eyes and he and his men escape back to their boat. The Cyclopes, prayed to his father to keep Odysseus and his men from returning home or if he does return home, that it takes many years.
  • Land of the Dead
  • Summary: The men land on the island Aeolia, the Wind King, Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag full of all the stormy winds that they would encounter but now will not. However, the men soon become curious and they decide to open the bag because they believe there is treasure inside. The winds from inside fly up to the sky and cause hurricanes which push them back to Aeolia.
  • Summary: The Laestrygonians are giant cannibals that wipe out all other ships but Odysseus'. They devour their crews but the Ithicans sail on to Aeaea where the enchantress Circe lives.
  • Summary: Here on Circe's Island, the enchantress feeds the hungry men. Odysseus realizes that she has added her own potion to the food which made them loose their motive to get home. This also turned the men into swine. Once Odysseus found out, he rushed to Circe to get her to free his men. He convinced her with help from Hermes. Circe then persuaded him to stay longer. Soon the men beg Circe to help them return home and she tells them that Odysseus must travel to the Land of the Dead alone and talk to the Prophet Teiresias.
  • Summary: In the Land of the Dead, Odysseus performs the rites that Circe tell him to bring Teiresias up from the dead. Once he brings him up, Teiresias tells Odysseus that he will be the only one of his men to return home.
  • Scylla & Charybdis
  • Island of Helios
  • Calypso's Island
  • Island of Scheria/the Phaeacians
  • Summary: Odysseus is told to be tied down to the boat and have his men stuff their ears with beeswax while they pass the sirens. Once they pass them, they face Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus decides to steer closer to Scylla, not telling his men of the prophecy. Scylla took 6 of his men.
  • Summary: The crew passes by Thrinakia, where Helios the Sun God lives. They are trapped there for weeks because of deadly storms. Odysseus tells his men not to touch the cattle. One day, he goes off alone to prey to the Gods for help. Eurylochus gathers the rest of the men and convinces them to eat the cattle with him. Odysseus returns and so does Helios who then prays to Zeus to punish the men. Once they set sail again, Zeus casts a lightning bolt which drowns all of the crew expect for Odysseus.
  • Summary: Calypso was a nymph who kept Odysseus for many years until finally the craving for home Odysseus felt became too much. She desired him for herself but alas, he did leave her to make his journey back home.
  • Summary: Odysseus is found by the daughter of King Alcinous, King of the Phaeacians. He is a guest at their dinner that evening and there he begins telling the story of his everlasting journey home.
