PROSERPINA AND PLUTO

- One day Proserpina, the young maiden of spring, was picking wildflowers with her mother, Ceres, the goddess of grain. Proserpina was very indulge in picking flower that she strayed far from her mother.
- Out of the dark depths sprang Pluto, god of the underworld. Standing up in his black chariot and kidnapped Proserpina.
- Pluto brought Proserpina to the underworld as his wife.
- Ceres wept bitterly, unable to save her daughter from Pluto.As a result of her sadness and rebellion against Jupiter for being complicit in her daughter's kidnapping, the earth became barren.
- Pluto being alarmed of the barren earth ordered Mercury his messenger to bring Proserpina back to her mother
- Mercury delivered the message to Pluto and Proserpina.
- Before returning to Earth, Proserpina ate the pomegranate seed that Pluto had given her.The pomegranate seed is a trick to keep Proserpina from abandoning him and to ensure that she would always return to him.
- Proserpina and Mercury Goes back to earth
- Proserpina and Ceres reunites. Ceres was no longer sad and it made the earth flourish again. However, Proserpina can only stay for a certain period of time and must go back to Pluto.During the absence of Proserpina Ceres is mourning and it makes the earth barren again.
