- In the year 1808, John Dalton created the first atomic theory. His theory was that matter made up of atoms that are indivisible and indestructible
- The oxygen combined with either one or two volumes of nitric oxide in closed vessels over water
- Dalton’s atomic theory also stated that all compounds were composed of combinations of these atoms in defined ratios
- The total pressure of a mixture of gases amounted to the sum of the partial pressures that each individual gas exerted while occupying the same space!

- Dalton's experiments on gases led to his discovery that the total pressure of a mixture of gases amounted to the sum of the partial pressures that each individual gas exerted while occupying the same space. In 1803 this scientific principle officially came to be known as Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures
