Now that we have country, we need to make rules to prevent tyrannical leaders like the King George III from becoming in charge our country. We need to figure out how to distribute power so we can't get a dictator. If the power is shared between many people across many legislative branches, one person can't unfairly have all of the power.
That's a great point! I think one way that we could prevent one person or group from having too much power is by giving all states an equal say in congress.
That's completely unfair to large states! States with tiny populations shouldn't have the same amount of a say as the states with large populations.
I disagree. If states have a proportional amount of representatives, the large states could become tyrannical and take over the government!
We need to stop arguing and start compromising! If you guys will be quiet and listen to my idea for a compromise, we might be able to satisfy everybody. My idea for a compromise is that the state representatives can be split up into two sections. There will be the Senate and the House of Representatives! Each state will have two people representing that state in the Senate and the amount of people in the House of Representatives for each state will be determined by the population of the state that they are representing! Together, the two branches will make decisions!
What a wonderful idea! Everybody gets what they want and nobody can come into power unfairly, because the power is shared! We can also have the citizens vote on the representatives so the representatives can't be tyrants and dictators!
I agree, but we still have a few things to figure out. For example, what will the government be in charge of and what will the states be in charge of. We also need to figure out slavery and how that plays into all of this. Will slaves count towards the population when we determine the proportional amount of representatives for the House Of Representatives? Will we even allow slavery to exist in America?
For starters, I think we should definitely get rid of slavery! It is not fair to African-Americans!
I agree that slavery is wrong, and so do most of our country's citizens, but many plantation owners would be devastated if we outlawed it. I think that we should make laws that benefit slavery, but not mention the word slavery, because Americans know that it is wrong.
I agree with what was just said. However, I think that slaves should count as a person when it comes to counting the population because it will give the slave-owning states (like my home state of Virginia) more representatives in congress, which will give those states more power to protect and defend slavery.
You just completely contradicted yourself! If we are not going to abolish slavery, then they shouldn't count as human! Plus, if they don't count as human, colonies such as my home colony of Connecticut will have more of a say in Congress.
