  • The black death, commonly known as the bubonic plague is a disease that is transmitted to people by infected fleas that travel on rodents. It was believed to have started in China in 1334.
  • Fleas carried bacteria which spread the infection when they bit the rat on which they lived. The rats carried fleas that were infected with the disease, when they no longer had rats to feed on, they moved onto humans. Once bitten, humans would contract the plague. The infected fleas moved on to other victims once their dead host passed, and the cycle continued.
  • The plague arrived in Europe in October 1347 when infected rats hopped aboard trading ships from the black sea. The disease was spread to Europe through Asia due to the many trade routes both continents had with each other. The disease quickly spread throughout the whole ship, infecting everybody. Soon everyone on board were infected by the disease.
  • When 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina. People gathering on the docks were met with a shocking surprise: the majority of the sailors on board were dead, and those who were still alive were gravely ill and covered with black sores oozing blood and pus.
  • The Black Death was spreading throughout Europe at this point. Unfortunately, many were unaware of the disease's spread until people began to die in the streets. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people died as a result of the disaster. It quickly spread like wildfire, killing children, adults, and even babies. This deadly plague wiped off a third of the population. It was, and still is, the worst breakout of the time.
  • Patients develop sudden onset of fever, headache, chills, and weakness and one or more swollen, tender and painful lymph nodes (called buboes). This form usually results from the bite of an infected flea.
