Melanie sat in her booth, ignoring the teacing machine. She closed her eyes and began dreaming about flamingos. She saw hundreds of flame colored birds wading in a shallow lake under the clear blue sky. From the pictures she had seen in an old book, she knew their feet webbed. A few had feathers which were red so red, they seemed almost on fire (metaphor). Suddenly a buzzer went off. Melanie oppened her eyes. The dream was gone. She was back in the harsh glare of the teaching booth. The green light on the panel blinked twice and the door to the booth slid open. Melanie got up and walked out into the hall. Her mom met her in the waiting room, "Lets go Mel," her mother said

and helped her put her gas mask on because of the smog polluted air.

All the way home Melanie wondered when her parents would take her to the Natrual Park, it's the only place in the world where actual living birds are. Her parents had half promised to ake her over Christmas break. Melanie always dreamed of the day she would go and see birds and not just in the books. Melanie's father had denied it at first because he didn't want a child to see a bright colorful world but be disapointed when she goes back to reality. But Melanie's mother had promised so he agreed. When the dxay had finally arrived Melanie was extremely excited, they took a helicopter. Once she got out of the helicopeter she thoguht everything looked beautiful and wondered why the rest of the world coudn't belike thi?

Melanie ran off to look for some flamingos, she looked up and saw a large patch of clear sky, it was beautiful. She heard her father's voice in the distance, she didn't want him to take her back into the other- polluted world. She went deeper into the woods where she came across the other side of the lake. And then she saw one, a flamingo! It was standing still in the lake, she could hear her fathers voice getting closer, and without thinking, Melanie went into the lake. Oh don't be afraid, she said, I won't hurt you. And then Melanie touched the bird, then the flamingo fell over in the water and floated there. Melanie bent over and touched it, it was hard and cold. It was plastic! Melanie began to cry.

Years and years ago we had real flamingos here, the caretaker went on. when they lifted into the air theur feather seemed to catch fire in the sunlight. We have some old movies and they certainly looked beautiful. It's a shame, isn't it, that people are crowded too close to the park. And the wate rin the lake more than just this little island to survive.

Melanie stopped crying. She heard everything the caretaker said. She picked up the firebid and carefully stood it up again. Goodbye, she whispered. And turned to go.

Melanie turned around and said,"My world is too polluted and over-populated like a swarm of bees (simile) to function and have nice, beautiul things." and then she turned around and kept walking.
