  • Why do you ask, son?
  • Ok then, I'll explain it to you.
  • Dad, what's a cell theory.
  • Our teacher gave it as an assignment.
  • It all started with Robert Hooke. While observing cork using a compound microscope, Hooke discovered what appeared to be small, hollow compartments in it. This made him think of the small rooms in a monastery, so he gave them the name "cells".
  • And then came Anton van Leeuwenhoek. He started by creating more powerful lenses that he would use to observe cloth. He was then able to make the single-lens microscope and observed bacteria and protozoa.
  • Leeuwenhoek was also one of the first scientists to refer to living cells when he observed an abundant number of single-celled organisms, which he then called animalcules.
  • After that, two dear friends, Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, started doing their own observations. Matthias Schleiden was fascinated with plant cells and he started studying them using the compound microscope. He then concluded that projected plant parts are made of cells.
  • Theodor Schwann also started studying plant and animal cells and was intrigued by their similarities. From studying these two, he was able to determine that all animals are made of cells. And because of that, he was able to make the 1st statement in the cell theory, which is "all living things are made of cells".
  • And then came Rudolf Virchow who stated that all cells some from preexisting cells, which is the 2nd part of the cell theory, "all existing cells are produced by other living cells.
  • Collectively, the concepts from Schleiden, Schwann, and Virchow were summarized into what is known as cell theory, which states the following: all organisms are composed of cells; cells are the smallest and basic units of structure and function in organisms; and cells arise from previously existing cells.
  • So, do you finally understand the cell theory son?
  • Yes Mom, I will.
  • Yes!!! Thank you so much for explaining Mom and Dad.
  • You're welcome son, ask us anytime, ok?
