  • For settlers, a career depended on the region they lived in. In the New England Colonies, you probably are a farmer or fisher. Some people did whaling, which was dangerous, but it promised adventure. Others were lumbers, who are people that cut down trees.
  • You're coming with me!
  • In the Middle Colonies, farming was the most common job. Some boys chose to be a printer, while others were miners. Some people worked in shipyards building and repairing ships. There were lots of fertile lands which made growing wheat easy.
  • In the Southern Colonies, many people owned large rice plantations. Families who grew rice could sell it for luxuries. Growing Tobacco was also common in the Southern Colonies. Many families produced cotton and grain.
  • European traders traveled to West Africa and brought guns and other goods. The leaders traded slaves for the goods which was helpful for them. Then they had to march across Africa to board ships, some died on the way. Then the slaves were forced to survive the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • When they arrived at the colonies, they were brought to auctions. The bidders bid on the strongest and fastest man. Then the slaves were sold to the highest bidder. If a slave didn't get sold, it would be sold in the next town.
  • Then, the owners made them do hard work or traded them. Some worked on the plantations, while others where traded for goods. They had bad food and shelter like when they sleep on straw. They were whipped when they disobeyed.
