- "Lexington Avenue, eleven stories below" Tom Benecke, and his wife Clare live in a apartment in New York.
- "At the end of the hallway, wearing a slip, both hands raised to one ear, clipping on an earing. She smiled at him a silent very pretty girl with light brown, almost blonde hair" Clare was the most perfect woman, she was getting ready to go out to the movies with her husband.
- "He was tempted to go with her; it was not actually true that he had to work tonight, though he very much wanted to." Tom decided to choose his job over spending time with his wife.
- "Turning, he saw a sheet of white paper drifting to the floor in a series of arcs, and another sheet, yellow, moving toward the window." All of Tom's hard work has flown out the window and he is so upset that he wants to g get it.
- "He swung a leg over the sill, then felt for and found the ledge a yard below the window with his foot." Now Tom is climbing out the window without thinking just to get a sheet of paper that had his project for work on it.
- "He stood on the ledge outside in the slight, chill breeze, eleven stories above the street, staring into his own apartment, odd and different-seeming now" As he starts to make his way to the paper 15 yards away he starts to second guess the decision he had made.
