  • In 1974 Prime minister Norman kirk instated the dawn raids to catch overstayers
  • 
  • Police were allowed to raid people houses and stop them on the street and ask for identification or a passport
  • They were arrested, locked in cells and eventually deported if they couldn't provide a passport or valid work permit
  • Robert Muldoon and the National party were elected in 1974 and won the election by a landslide 47.6% of the votes.
  • 
  • When national came into power the dawn raids were accelerated. Robert muldoon pushed the idea that the Pacific islanders had degraded New Zealand's society.
  • The dawn raids ended in 1979 when they were terminated by National as a result of protests and bad publicity
