  • We need to find a way to stop the Western powers from access to Berlin.
  • But how?
  • ... lets build a wall that will help our idea of stopping connection/food and other supplies to West Berlin.
  • Germany then was divided into four zones. Then the U.S, France, and Great Britain decided to combine their zones into one and controlled West Germany. Then the other side was the U.S.S.R. and the Soviets controlled East Germany.
  • How about we use planes to drop supplies over the wall to the people in West Berlin
  • The Soviets also didn't like that the Western powers combined into one and controlled West Berlin. The Soviets saw this as the Western powers were trying to team up against them. The Soviets wanted to block the three Western powers from access to Berlin.
  • In 1948, the Soviets attempted to block West Berlin by creating a wall known as the Berlin Wall. This caused the residents of West Berlin to only have enough food for five weeks, making the Western powers lose connection, and stop traffic with West Berlin.
  • The Western powers did not like the idea of the Berlin Wall but didn't want to invade and start a war with the Soviets. So the Western powers started to fly supplies, food, and fuel into West Berlin which is going to be known as the Berlin Airlift.
  • They decided to take the risk and fly planes over the wall dropping supplies. The Soviets didn't want to shoot the planes down because it could start a war with the Western powers.
  • For 327 days, planes took off and landed every few minutes, around the clock. In 277,000 flights, they brought in 2.3 million tons of food and supplies to the West Berliners.
