  • Oh...Well what are my treatment options?
  • I am so sorry, but the results came back, and you have breast cancer.
  • Next appointment (several weeks later
  • I believe that antimetabolites are the best option for you. I suggest gemcitabine as your drug treatment. Let me show you how it works on the screen.

  • In the cycle that your cells rotate through, this is what Gap 1 looks like. During this phase the cell is growing and preparing for mitosis.
  • The next phase is called synthesis. In this process, the DNA is replicated to produce two copies for the daughter cells.
  • By using antimetabolites to treat your cancer, the drug interferes with normal cellular metabolism, the process in which food is converted into energy. Specifically, antimetabolites disrupts the de novo synthesis of purines and pyrimidines, which is the process where a new strand of DNA is created, to ensure that new cancer cells are not being reproduced. The drug I recommend for you, Gemcitabine, interferes with pyrimidine synthesis in particular. It gets phosphorylated rapidly to form active metabolites, giving you energy.
  • In the next phase, G2, the cell continues to grow, with the antimetabolites, and prepares to go through the process of mitosis.
