Texte du Storyboard

  • Hubris: Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness (Achebe, 13).
  • Hamartia: Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak (Achebe, 61).
  • Peripeteia: The only course open to Okonkwo was to flee from the clan. It was a crime against the earth goddess to kill a clansman, and a man who committed it must flee from the land (Achebe, 124).
  • Anagnorisis: In a flash, Okonkwo drew his machete. The messenger crouched to avoid the blow. It was useless... He heard voices asking: 'Why did he do it?' He wiped his machete on the sand and went away (Achebe, 205).
  • Nemesis: Then they came to the tree from which Okonkwo's body was dangling, and they stopped dead (Achebe, 207).
  • Catharsis: Obierika, who had been gazing steadily at his friends danging body, turned suddenly to the District Commissioner and said ferociously: 'That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drove him to kill himself, and now he will be buried like a dog...' (Achebe, 209)
