- Citra and Rowan are two teens living in a future world of no hunger, sickness or poverty. Their government is controlled by a computer called the Thunderhead that makes perfect decisions. The only people who can end lives are the Scythes, and they are commanded to do so to keep the population under control. Scythes wear thick robes wherever they go.
- Climax
- Death at the hands of a Scythe is called gleaning, and can be given out in any way the scythe chooses. Scythe Faraday comes to Citra's house and Rowan's school and recruits them as apprentices. Then, he suddenly gleans himself by jumping in the way of a moving train because only one of the apprentices can be a scythe and Rowan has to kill Citra or vice versa.
- Falling Action
- Citra will become a scythe!
- She must glean Rowan!
- After Scythe Faraday dies, Rowan's apprenticeship is taken up by Scythe Goddard at the Winter Conclave,- a meeting for the scythes- and Citra's goes to Scythe Curie. Scythe Goddard and his disciple scythes are famous for their mass gleanings. Goddard enjoys his work, but scythes are not supposed to.
- Resolution
- Since Goddard is a bad scythe, Rowan beheads him when he is mass-gleaning a church. Scythe Volta in the yellow robes thinks mass-gleaning a church is wrong and gleans himself. Scythe Rand in the green robes and Scythe Chomsky in the orange robes set the church on fire and glean all the people inside it.
- High Blade Xenocrates in the golden robes- the leader of the scythes- said that Citra was to be make a scythe and be forced to glean Rowan at the Spring Conclave. Citra punched him in the mouth while wearing a special ring that scythes wear. If a person kisses it, or gets punched in the mouth with it, they will get immunity.
- Immunity is a privilege given to the family or friends of a person that is gleaned. The person with immunity cannot be gleaned for one year. Each scythe must choose a patron historic to be named after. Citra chose to be named Scythe Anastasia, a Russian princess who was killed before she became queen to symbolize the future of the Scythedom she wants to see.
- You can't glean him! He has immunity!
