- Poverty affects children's health cumulatively over the course of their lives, and illnesses in adulthood are typically caused by early health-related incidents that accumulated over time. When poverty affects a child's health lifestyle during the first two years of life, this will cause damage to the child's neurological and musculoskeletal systems. A youngster will likely have cognitive issues that could damage their growth and future if the brain does not acquire enough nutrients.
