- (looks around at the circle of faces, his eyes frightened,his face contorted).But...but I didn’t know who he was. I certainly didn’t know who he was. He comes walkin’ outof the darkness—how am I supposed to know who he was? (He grabs STEVE.) Steve—youknow why I shot! How was I supposed to know he wasn’t a monster or something? (He grabsDON now.) We’re all scared of the same thing. I was just tryin’ to...tryin’ to protect my home,that’s all! Look, all of you, that’s all I was tryin’ to do. (He looks down wildly at the body.) Ididn’t know it was somebody we knew! I didn’t know—
- It’s...it’s the kid. It’s Tommy. He’s the one. [There’s a gasp from the crowd as we cutto a shot of the mother holding her boy. The boy at first doesn’t understand. Then, realizing theeyes are all on him, he buries his face against his mother, SALLY.]
- [The people shout, accuse, scream. The camera tilts back and forth. We see panic-stricken facesin close-up and tilting shots of houses as the lights go on and off. Slowly, in the middle of thisnightmarish morass of sight and sound, the camera starts to pull away, until once again we’vereached the opening shot, looking at the Maple Street sign from high above. The cameracontinues to move away until we dissolve to a shot of the metal side of a spacecraft, which sitsshrouded in darkness.
