- What does the character think about
- As Jude began her life in Mallard she never felt like she belonged because of her skin color. She was always looking at herself wondering why it was such a crime for her to be such a dark skin complexion. "How come I don't look like you"(Bennett 87). These were the words Jude said to her mother because she wanted to have a light skin complexion. Jude is always thinking of how she can fit in at Mallard rather than being seen as an outcast.
- After Jude meets Reese and begins to fall in love, she becomes a very selfless person because she is always worrying about Reese rather than herself. As the author states in the the text, "Two hundred dollars. He would never save enough by himself. "I need a new job," she told Barry"(Bennett 127). Jude took it upon herself to help Reese save up for his surgery not thinking about the fact that she needs money herself. She is always trying to please Reese when she has her own trauma she needs to recuperate from.
- What kind of person are they?
- Jude has lived in Mallard for many years while being surrounded by people who are very colorist to her because of her dark skin complexion. Being surrounding by so much negativity made her want to leave and run away from Mallard. As the author states in the text, "In the end, she rescued herself"(Bennett 83). She always questioned her mom about when they were going to leave Mallard. So, once she knew they were not going to leave anytime soon she made sure that she had a way to leave Mallard and all she had to do was run.
