  • You have to learn a monologue, which you will perform in front of a panel.
  • Esmeralda Santiago moved to Brooklyn from Puerto Rico with her mother and several of her brothers and sisters when she was 13, leaving behind her father and life in the country. Esmeralda and her siblings were sad to go away from their country and the rest of their family.
  • CLIMAX
  • Good morning.
  • The first week Esmeralda was given a series of tests that showed that even though she couldn’t speak English very well, she read and wrote it at the tenth-grade level. 
  • FALLING ACTION
  • You and Bonnie are sisters decorating a Christmas tree.
  • Mr. Barone, the guidance counselor was preparing Esmeralda for the Performing Arts Academy audition. He selected a speech from The Silver Cord, a play by Sidney Howard.
  • RESOLUTION
  • We will notify your school in a few weeks. It was very nice to meet you.
  • Esmeralda was nervous. She started giving her monologue but forgot her English and took a minute to finish her three-minute monologue.
  • The judges gave her the opportunity to perform a pantomime with a junior student.
  • Esmeralda approved the Performing Arts Academy audition.
