  • For decades, women have fought for equal opportunities and treatment within the workforce, particularly in the area of compensation. While women have made great strides in closing the pay gap, Forbes projects “at the current rate, the gender pay gap will remain until 2059.”
  • Gender Inequality in the Workplace
  • It’s no secret that men and women are both treated and valued differently in the workplace
  • Some things which contribute to the inequality women face in the workplace are 1.The amount of unpaid work women do, outside of the workplace, in comparison to men. It’s estimated that women are responsible for up to 30% of unpaid work in comparison to men. 2. Motherhood. Employer’s often view a woman’s commitment to motherhood as a lack of commitment to her career or workplace and consequently are overlooked or passed over for promotions and professional opportunities
  • The Equal Pay Act of 1963: a step toward equality. The Act established law requiring equal payment for employees based on the requirements of the role and its responsibilities, regardless of gender. However, disparities still exist from state-to-state and across industries. While some states have equal pay laws, there are allowances based on seniority or performance, making enforcement of those laws more complicated.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, women’s employment has shifted drastically. Shutdowns of schools and lack of options for childcare presented many women with the difficult choice to abandon their jobs and care for their children, setting female employment in the United States back decades. “In February 2021, women’s labor force participation rate was 55.8% – the same rate as April 1987.”
  • One UK based organization offered these six suggestions:1. Incentivize Paternity Leave2. Subsidize Childcare3. Remote Working Options4. Pay Transparency5. Ensure Promotions and Rewards are Fair6. Offer Female Employees a Raise
