  • I've been struck by a cannonball!
  • EARLY LIFE
  • MIDDLE YEARS
  • God is in everything...
  • LATER LIFE
  • I now pronounce the Society of Jesus a part of the Catholic Church!
  • Inigo Lopez de Loyola was a brave and fearsome army officer and was a servant of the court to the 2nd Duke of Najera. On 21 May, 1521, in a battle against the French in Pamplona, Ignatius was hit by a cannonball and broke and severely damaged both of his legs. After his army surrendered Inigo was confronted by the French. They were so impressed by his bravery that they tended to his wounds and escorted him back to his family home in Loyola to recover. It was there that Ignatius decided he wanted to devote his life to God. This was the changing point in his life and is the reason he is now known today as an influential character in catholicism
  • THE BATTLE OF PAMPLONA
  • aIn 1522, not long after his conversion to a pilgrim, Ignatius sat praying on the bank of the Cardoner River near the village of Manresa, Spain. During the prayer, Ignatius claims, that the eyes to his understanding of a deeper faith were unlocked. He then understood that God was in all things, which would later become a major principle in the Jesuits values. Ignatius then abandoned severe fasting and harsh penitential practices and embraced a more balanced spirituality. This started the change of Ignatius' teaching and pilgramage around the world.
  • CARDONER RIVER VISION
  • After a lot of discussion and prayer, collectively as a group, the Jesuits decided to formally create a religious group under the approval of Pope Paul III. The founding members of the Society of Jesus took a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience under Ignatius. They took this as a sign that they could change the world and make it a better place. On the 15th of August 1534 in Montmartre, Paris, France the Society of Jesus was officially founded. This was the start of Ignatius' endeavours in education and teaching the ways of God.
