- Winnie! Come in, your lunch is ready, and don't talk to that toad!

- Mae Tuck is ready to ride out to meet her sons, but Mr. Tuck is sleeping, so she will go alone. (Ch. 2)
- You shouldn't drink the spring water.
- Why not?
- Winnie Foster wants less rules and a sibling, but her parents are strict and she is an only child, so she wants to run away. (Ch. 3)
- Please don't cry, child.
- The stranger wants information, but then Granny comes out and interrupts the conversation, so the stranger leaves with little information. (Ch. 4)
- Winnie wants to drink the spring water, but Jesse Tuck won't let her, so the Tucks kidnap her. (Ch. 5)
- The Tucks want to keep Winnie for a day, but Winnie wants to go home and have a drink from the spring, so the Tucks explain why they have to keep her and why she can't drink from the spring. (Ch. 6)
- I want to go home!!!
- The Tucks want to tell their story to Winnie, but it is unknown to them that the man in the yellow suit is eavesdropping on them, so they go to their house while being followed by the yellow suit man. (Ch. 7,8)
- Jesse fell out of the tree and landed plum on his head, and wasn't even scratched.
