- Hi my name is Koda. I’m 11 and I live with my family in Northern Maine. I'm a Native American, and I’m going to tell you a story about how we learned about maple syrup.
- It was a cold day in February, when we looked up into the trees and noticed that as the squirrels came out of hibernation they would break small twigs off the trees and drink the water that was dripping out.
- Oh wow, that's sweet and really good
- We also noticed that they were only drinking from the maple trees. So my great ancestors decided to try it. They broke off a small twig and tried the water that was dripping out. The water was sweet.
- They decided to tap the trees and then boil down the water that came out until it was hard and candy like.
- That's the story of how the native american people learned how to make maple syrup.
