  • Description of compass
  • How the compass works
  • The compasses impact on society
  • In Ancient China, the compass was first used for worship, fortune telling, and Geomancy (the art of aligning buildings). The first compasses had a central pool of water surrounded by concentric circles. Over time as the compass started to be more well known and better built, was used for more useful purposes.
  • The most popular style of the first Chinese compass used a lodestone (which automatically points to the south) and a bronze plate. The lodestone was carved into the shape of a spoon. The spoon was placed on a flat plate of bronze. The magnetized lodestone aligned itself with the Earth's magnetic field and pointed in one of the four cardinal directions.
  • The Compass had a huge impact on society. Before the compass, Sailors had to keep the shore in sight so they could see landmarks, or they risked getting lost. Compasses made it possible for explorers to sail far out into oceans and away from land. This led to the discovery of new countries and made trading with other cultures much easier.
