  • Spanish Rule and Colonization
  • I declare this island the territory of Spain!
  • Becoming a US territory
  • Current Citizenship Issues
  • Why can't we vote for the president? This is unfair!
  • The island was first colonized in 1493, being named San Juan Bautista. Much later, in the late 1890s, the Spanish- American war broke out, which led Spain to hand over Puerto Rico along with Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines.
  • More Issues with the current system
  • I wish I had more support from the government. It would really help.
  • Spain ceded the island to the United States and 19 years later, in 1917, all Puerto Ricans were given US citizenship. However, they did not get all the same rights and benefits as people living in the 50 states.
  • A solution
  • Yay! Now we have the same rights as citizens living in the states!
  • Although Puerto Ricans are citizens, they can't vote for the president of the United States while they live there. In addition to this, they have one representative in the house, called the resident commissioner, who cannot vote . Some argue that it is ok because they can vote for their own government. This is true but the US federal government ultimately decides the direction in which the territory goes.
  • Why it is not already a state
  • I don't think statehood is good for our future. We should be our own country.
  • According to NBC news, compared to Mississippi (the poorest US state), Puerto Rico gets much lower Medicaid health coverage, with 55 cents for every dollar in Puerto Rico, but 76 cents in Mississippi.
  • With statehood, there would be no funding limit for Puerto Rico's Medicare and Medicaid, Puerto Ricans would be granted the ability to vote, and there would be more representation in congress.
  • Some people resist to statehood for different reasons: Puerto Rico is very different culturally and statehood might cause a loss of that culture, there is also an independence movement among Puerto Ricans, and congress might not want to allow it to become a state because of its dire economic state. It has never petitioned for statehood due to these reasons but recent referendums have showed that voters agree with being a US state.
