Family Illness

- When Champ starts showing signs of mental illness and starts acting differently, his worried mother searches for help. He cousin, Cousin Roz, finally visits her with a psychotherapist. They tell Champ's mom about how terribly they treat people who go to them for help.
- I could never let this happen to Champ.
- Your son is lazy! He's a biblical sloth!
- There was a nasty, sixteen-year-old girl that came to us. We dumped her in boiling water, and you could hear her scream from Sacremento to Tijuana! That's what we do to crazy folks! Woo-hoo!
- In his room, Champ suffers from hearing sounds and voices. Monsters and tigers come out of his lamp switch.
- Shut the ugly up!
- Kill yourself!
- Champ's mom takes him to Kaiser Hospital the morning after speaking to Cousin Roz.
- Suicide?
- Have you ever attempted suicide?
- Yes. This morning. I took a whole bottle of aspirins.
- Mom! You've betrayed me!
- After getting his stomach pumped, Champ is taken to a clinic in a different town, where he is supposed to stay for three days, but the doctors eventually decide he needs to stay longer.
- I want to go home. I was only supposed to stay for three days.
- You can't.
- After Champ is diagnosed with schizophrenia, he goes from doctor to doctor, but only one actually gives him the help he needs. The tigers finally start to disappear.
