  • World War II devastated not just Japan, but the Korean Peninsula, and in 1945, the United States and the USSR captured the peninsula and ended Japanese rule there. Korea was divided into two occupation zones that were intended to be temporary.
  • June 30, 1950 (U.S. joins the war and fights North Korea)
  • Korea was divided into two by the 38th parallel occupation zones. In 1949, South Korea was taken over by the American forces (U.S.).North Korean was taken over by the USSR (Soviet Union).
  • October 25, 1950(China joins the war and fights South Korea)
  • When some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.
  • July 27, 1953
  • President Harry Truman gives a pledge that the U.S. that will help the countries that are threatened of communism. American soldiers slowly withdrew from South Korea.
  • Communist China joined North Korea in the war in November 1950, unleashing a massive Chinese ground attack againstAmerican forces. The Soviet Union also covertly supported North Korea.
  • Mark W. Clark for the UN Command, Peng Dehuai for the Chinese, and Kim Il-Sung for North Korea conclude an armistice ending hostilities. A demilitarized zone is created that roughly follows the prewar border along the 38th parallel. South Korean Pres. Syngman Rhee announces his acceptance of the agreement, but no representative of South Korea ever signs the document.
