- Little Jimmy starts to feel bad at school
- Yes, let me give you a hall pass.
- I don't feel well, can I go to the nurse's office?
- Little Jimmy speaks with the nurse
- My eyes are watery and red, I have been coughing, and I have a rash inside my cheek.
- Tell me what is going on.
- Mom arrives at the school
- The nurse called and told me that you aren't feeling well! Let's go to the doctor.
- Jim is a 10 year old boy that lives with his mother and father. He is an only child and is in the 5th grade. He is a healthy boy with no significant medical or surgical history or allergies. He is not on any medications.
- Jim arrives at the doctor's office
- You have measles. It looks like your incubation period started about 1-2 weeks ago when the other student had the measles while at school.
- It sounds like you have measles, a disease that can be contracted by particles in the air or from respiratory droplets.
- Jim started feeling bad today, 10/12/21 while in class. He has a cough, a fever, conjunctivitis in both eyes, and is starting to get a rash inside his cheeks.
- Back at home
- Rest up and get better!
- The nurse called Jimmy's mom to come pick him up due to his symptoms. She is going to take him to the doctor to see what could be going on with Jimmy.
- 6 days later
- Mom informs the doctor that a child in Jimmy's class was recently sick with measles and that he is just now back at school. The doctor realizes that little Jimmy never had a measles shot. The doctor informs Jimmy that he will need to stay home until after a maculopapular rash erupts. She states he is contagious from about 4 days before, until about 5 days after contracting the rash.
- Wow, so the disease has been in my body since I contracted it from my friend at school when he sneezed on me!
- Measles can be contracted through particles in the air (airborne) and by an infected person when they cough or sneeze (droplet)
- Mom had to contact the health department to let them know about little Jimmy's measles since the disease is reportable.
- Little Jimmy noticed a rash the day after he was sent home from school, 10/12/21. Today, 10/18/21, he will be returning to school as he is no longer contagious. After school, his mom is taking him back to the doctor to receive the MMR vaccine to prevent measles in the future.
- Yes!! I have had my rash for 5 days now, so I get to go back to school!
