  • Anna gets home from work.
  • Hey honey I have some bad news but is your leg better?
  • Hey, no it’s not, the doctor said I may never be able to walk again. What's the bad news?
  • OH NO!
  • I got fired from work because there was not enough money to pay us higher salaries.
  • The next day
  • Me too, what's for breakfast?
  • Mom I'm hungry.
  • Anna and William look at each other with frowns.
  • Anna checks the fridge and finds milk that is almost done.
  • She takes out three glasses and pours the children equal amounts of milk.
  • My stomach is making noises mom!
  • Mom I’m still hungry.
  • Anna and William empty their pockets and find that they have little change left.
  • Sorry kids we don't have food right now, let me make a list of things we need and I will go buy it.
  • Anna writes down a list of things they need in the house.
  • She goes to find a coat in the closet.
  • Oh dear I don't have a coat. It's snowing so much outside.
  • I don't know how long this will last us... but I have no other choice that is within budget and healthy.
  • Anna grabs a thin sweater which is the warmest thing she could find.

  • The Great Depression affected many families like the Carltons, many even worse than them. It was a time when almost everyone had suffered, and life was extremely tough. Prices were high, and many people lost their jobs, which led some to homelessness.
