- King Arthur and his knights are gathered to celebrate Christmas and the new year. A man, entirely green, with a marvelous horse comes through the door. He denies all of the Kings inquires about what his intentions are, the Green Knight states that he has a challenge.
- "If the gift meant remaining alive, it might be well worth it"(230).
- Please, I beg you, keep the sash hidden from my lord.
- The challenge is for someone to have one swing at the Green Knight’s head and in a year and one day, the Green Knight will return the hit. Gawain takes the King’s place and agrees to be a part of this challenge.
- "No more strikes my friend; you've had your swing!"(302).
- I see the sash has protected you, but you have lied to me.
- Gawain got a good handle on the ax and slashed off the neck of the Green Knight, but he didn’t fall, the Green Knight grabbed his head and rode off on his horse.
- "Since it was not for the sash itself or for lust, but because you loved your life, I blame you less"(345).
- The King at the castle goes out hunting everyday and they agree to trade gifts when he returns. Gawain receives a magical sash at the castle from the lady who has also given him kisses. Wearing the sash no man under Heaven could hurt him.
- On the Green Knight's 3rd swing he struck down as hard as he could but only caused a small nick on Gawain's neck.
- The Green Knight leaves Gawain with the sash and the scar on his neck so he can remember his sin. He also reveals that he was the lord at the castle Gawain stayed at the days before.
